Manager Report
Board Meeting
December 8,
2001
Summary
Administration
- In response to a
request from the Board, the I. M. contacted Maggie Petersen regarding the
continuing operation of V-CART and the “9911” telephone number. She indicated that both will continue
to be operational.
- Following his annual
evaluation by the I. M., Captain John Farris is recommended for a merit
pay increase as of his employment anniversary date, November 12.
Transportation
- Relief ferry
captain. Efforts to date to find a
relief captain have not produced one.
However, interest has been expressed recently by three people. One has responded with a filled-out
application and an application packet has been mailed to another. The third person is interested but said
she is currently living too far away and will consider applying if a
projected move takes place in the future.
- Marine insurance
renewal is due this month. Rates
have been increased by 11% for the primary coverage and 15% for the
“excess” coverage. The pollution
coverage premium is unchanged. The
broker indicates that “all” of their clients are receiving increases this
year, regardless of their loss history, and that the entire casualty
insurance field is seeing rate increases due to a variety of factors, including
the events of September 11.
- There were problems
with two of the ferry ramp motors recently. The service company that has been used for many years,
Cascade Machinery and Electric, in Seattle, has come out to repair the
motors as soon as they were called.
However, they have not been helpful at all when asked to develop a
plan detailing whether the existing motors, starters and wiring are
adequate for the job and environment.
Therefore the I. M. is looking for a new vendor that will be more
responsive to our needs, and for a comprehensive review of the
equipment. It appears that at
least one motor, the spare, is not compatible with the others and may not
be worth retaining. Cascade called
it “junk” and further stated this week that the other two motors are
“obsolete.” Further information
will be obtained as soon as possible.
Water
- Several water samples
taken in November and December, following installation of a new well pump
and new reservoir level controlling equipment, came back with unsatisfactory
results. This kind of increase is
very often seen as a temporary result of having worked on a water
system. The Department of Health
and our water manager, Larry Williams, have been informed. One recent sample came back clear but
several following that did not. A
light chlorination of the wells and the reservoir has been done, and Larry
Williams is to do another on December 8th. He, along with the Water Field
Operations person and the I. M., will inspect the water system on December
8th.

machines, but more information from Dick has yet to be received.
